Escape to Obion: Fire and Ice

Episode 1: Fire and Ice

The first point-and-click adventure we've done, which is a surprise now since it's so much easier to code than other sorts of games.

The challenge for the designer in this genre is in creating puzzles that are tough but not impossible. I think casual games players are a little more likely to get exasperated than they would be with a console or PC game.

Note to everyone who completes this game (or who try and then give up). This is a new series, and future episodes will be designed based on comments on earlier episodes. So, please feel free to say what you liked or didn't like in the game - what you found too easy, or what you thought was too frustrating or complicated.

I can't get the password to the gate in the fireplace. I've made all combinations with signs and planets, but it doesn't work. :(

Posted by: Ale Bonrruquer at January 20, 2006 04:42 PM

There is a kind of candle left at the fireplace. When you click on it you see the names of the planets. Write the signs down on a piece of paper. Now back to the books. Click on the signs in the right order as you wrote them down. When you did it right you read the word "trenchcoat".

Posted by: Marja at January 24, 2006 03:42 AM

i wrote trenchcoat were they ask for the password. it doesnt work...

How do you get the password????? HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: g_boy at February 5, 2006 02:19 PM

the password please help

Posted by: ann at February 5, 2006 04:29 PM

To get in the house, look at the window first and then count the fence posts.

For the dial puzzle, try to connect the lines from top left to bottom right.

For the ball and pipe puzzle, watch how the ball moves from left to right, as well as how the water goes up and down.

Damned if I know how to work out the password for the grating, though.

Posted by: Chris at February 6, 2006 11:45 AM

There are clues to what to do with the two words from the books behind the torches. Once you solve a puzzle (clocks or pipes), one of the torches lights up and illuminates the space behind it.

Posted by: Matt at February 6, 2006 12:46 PM

how can I solve the password problem?

I have solved the ball puzzle. I've written the words in the correct order with the screens, but I can't find the password (6 letters)

help me, please.

TRAS could be TARS or ATSR ... you will find.

... what could Tras spell that is around our planet...hmmm maybe STARS lol

Posted by: unknown at February 9, 2006 09:56 PM

the pword actually has nothign to do with a star guys use the letters you have and find something else with those letter try anagraming

Posted by: beth at February 10, 2006 11:27 AM

Ok, think about it. The word "star" is NOT a 6 letter word. We get it that tras is an anagram for star but for those of you who can't do math:
four letters is NOT EQUAL TO six letters!

Posted by: Kline at February 10, 2006 08:45 PM

oh dear god. is everyone in here smart enough to beat it still too stupid to just tell us what the fricken answers are?
(see kids? this is where cheating gets you.)

Posted by: shanny at February 10, 2006 09:51 PM

All the people getting frustrated: look for things lighting up and then you'll find out in what order you have to do things. Solve things with help of this site and you'll be fine.

Hi guys who made the game. Though you've had some people finding it too hard. With this comment site and a little googling I made it. Keep going! I had fun. It would help I think if people were knowing where they are and where they have to go. because you speak of a tunnel, but it wasn't clear to me that I have to FIND the tunnel first. And then I see a house... A little more help sometimes or a little explanation would help people feel a bit less lost. If only it was: click here for additional hint and then: maybe the key to the door is hidden somewhere near the fence? you don't have to spoil everything, just tell people where they are. Only when I played the whole thing with cheating did I notice that you guys built in subtle hints to get to places in the right order. Things light up etc. Nice way of letting you know where to go, but not clear enough for some people, maybe.

Posted by: smnthhs at February 11, 2006 10:38 AM

Thanks for the comment, shanny. 'Balancing' the games between being too confusing and too easy is the hardest part of making this series.
Occasionally we have gone back and added clues where is was too complicated, but in general we try to move forward and use lessons learned in earlier games to help direct future ones.

I'll be curious to hear what you think of the other games in this series.

Posted by: Matt at February 11, 2006 11:12 AM

Posted by: sicko at February 11, 2006 12:58 PM

nice game.

Posted by: John at February 12, 2006 01:46 PM

Posted by: DJ JAH JAH at February 17, 2006 07:48 AM

how on earth do you get in?

Posted by: rajiv at February 20, 2006 09:55 AM

its been said looooadsa times now!! (i cheated but i saw how you get it) corset.

Posted by: Jazz at March 2, 2006 02:40 AM

I think the reason people are having so much trouble "figuring out" the password to the fireplace is because the way you are supposed to figure it out makes NO sense. Two of the symbols it shows you in the key aren't even needed and two of them have the exact same letters when you look at the books. All you need are three symbols, and the order they need to go in.

Posted by: Khallayne at March 6, 2006 10:41 PM

Good game. At the beginning a bit hard, but when I read al the hints, it was a lot easier. By the way: the password is CORSET. Good luck everyone.

Posted by: Joanne at March 7, 2006 01:04 PM

Well, Im trying to figure out the passowrd using the numbersd and signs for the planets on the fire scone on the right, but so far, no luck. Or, no reaction.Maybe I chould use letters instead of numbers.

Posted by: zubeda at March 18, 2006 11:34 PM

Ive found out how to get the password, it complicated (reding the A4 sheet of papers with LOADS of notes onnit)

- Behind the right fire candle thing are the symbols and 1,3,5 abouve them. the numbers are the places.

- You translate the symbol to a letter. The symbol is shown on a book and the letter is under it, (there are two letters for one symbol)

Place: 1 2 3 4 5
1st letter: o s t <-letters from trenchcoat
2nd letter: c r e <-letters fromastrologer

then you read right to left, down to up and you get

its very compicated to explain ^^

Posted by: Daniel at March 19, 2006 07:42 AM

Those faded symbols in the bottom row are misleading. They drove me nuts as I used them to get utterly weird combinations like gastro and oceanC. In a game of subtlety it is often difficult to know which subtle hints to completely ignore.

Posted by: anonymous at March 22, 2006 01:24 AM

Well I liked this a lot. This is the first point and click game I have done. I found it via a site called lazylaces, and chose this one because I liked the look of it.

I don't think it's too hard, and thought it all made perfect sense. And I had absolutely no idea what to expect of a point and click game before I tried this. It's beautifully done and I really enjoyed it.

Am going straight on to the next level. Thanks a lot to the makers for a really fun half hour.

Posted by: Shrike at March 22, 2006 04:58 PM

Wow the last puzzle was hard. Not because I didn't figure it out but because my caps lock was on. It needed to be all lowercase. Other than that great game.

Posted by: 7thwiseguy at April 9, 2006 07:50 PM

Refering to Zubeda - I think the explanation is easier: simply place the numbers as seen from the candle thing on RH of fireplace being 3,5,1 in the order 1,3,5. Relate the symbols to these numbers and the letters (as seen on the book spines) will spell out downwards (in order)

Posted by: jools88 at April 25, 2006 06:24 PM

The password is corset. I can not tell you how to figure it out on your own because I cheated using the other peoples comments. The password is corset.

Posted by: Peter Fajner at April 26, 2006 05:34 PM

its all common sense when you've done it, i even had rsetco writen down and put in a box

butr that guy saying TRAS STAR etc confused the issuse

Posted by: Dan at May 11, 2006 12:43 PM

Yes that was the confused thing about it, he was saying around the planet with that letters. then everyone is going to think about STARS.
And STARS is 5 letters en doesn't have to do anything with CORSET, CORSETS -->DON'T-- stay/fly around our planet :P lol

Posted by: Milos at May 17, 2006 10:47 AM

Can someone give me the password please??

Posted by: Monique at May 29, 2006 09:25 AM

Some of this was really stupid.
What is the purpose of making someone click on the 7th fence post before being able to click on the door? If you want to make the player go through some extra steps, pretend the door is locked and put a key by the fence. At least then there will a logical flow from obstacle to puzzle to solution.

The last problem, the password, also made little sense. I got it, but I still don't understand the connection or how/why we were supposed to figure it out.

Hopefully the next segments are better.

Posted by: eric at June 30, 2006 01:52 AM

To get in the house try clicking on one of the pickets on the fence. Hint: Push tab and it will show you the things you can click on!

Posted by: Me at July 26, 2006 09:50 PM

Ok, I have typed in the word corset. Nothing happens. What the hell do I do?

Posted by: jason at September 2, 2006 03:48 AM
